Chapter 1"Arise, brave and noble Knight of the Realm. My heart is gladdened that you have heeded my summons with great haste."
Aylwyn Darkshadow slowly rose and looked into the face of Queen Marieke. "I live only to serve, Majesty. Command me, give me purpose."
The Queen looked at the face of the man standing before her. The wisdom behind his eyes betrayed the apparent youthfulness of his visage. Time has indeed been kind to him, his battles and tribulations do not show in his appearance. Only the occasional limp or verbal stumble show his true age. "The Captain of the Guard has fallen ill under mysterious circumstances. Our spies tell me that our enemies are massing for attack, even as we speak. Without your strength and wisdom, I fear all will be lost." As the Queen spoke, she slowly paced back and forth in front of the throne, clutching a small golden object in her hands.
"Fear not, my Lady. I shall go to the city gates immediately. I swear to you, that as long as I am able to draw breath, I shall let no one pass. I gave my life to you, freely, many years ago. It no longer has value to me. Only the greater good of the realm and your Majesty have any worth to me." replied Sir Aylwyn, as he once more dropped to one knee, head bowed. "Do not speak in terms such as those, you are very valued. You are an inspiration to all those around you. Many times, the Generals of our armies tell me they can see the change in thein troops when you are on the field of battle with them. Many who were unsure, became warriors along side you. Many more survived than would have, otherwise," said Marieke, as she put her hand on his shoulder, "thanks to your example."
"Thank you for the kind words, my Queen. But time is precious now, and with your permission I will gather my equipment and go to the city gates to prepare for what is to come." Aylwyn rose and gave a low bow to the Queen. As he began to turn to leave, the Queen called to him "Wait a moment! I would like you to take this with you, for luck." She handed the object she had been holding to Aylwyn, a small gold shield bearing the same Coat of Arms that was carved on the top of the throne, the symbol of the Royal family.
"Thank you, my Lady. This cannot fail to bring us anything but good fortune." Aylwyn said as he took it from her gentle grasp.
